007 - University of Nottingham

In our first year of teaching, we drew on the city as a place for our students to learn about architecture, culture and society, and last year, our focus shifted to the fundamentals of architecture. Through an understanding and testing of the Vitruvian virtues, we asked our students to use the principles of stability, utility and beauty as a framework for their decision making.

We emphasised the current importance of thrift and ethics of building, focusing on producing large models and fabricating 1:1 pieces that engaged students with hands on making and process of construction.

We set out to create a unit culture based on shared experiences and learning as well as individual project development. Through each year we accumulated a body of research, for example experiments in cladding techniques and material expression done in groups, that would benefit individual final projects. This collaborative way of working was important for creating a positive atmosphere in the studio.
